Whanganui Opera Week is a series of public events where students of the New Zealand Opera School present public performances culminating in a Gala evening at the Royal Wanganui Opera House. Other events include a lunchtime concert; public masterclasses and the ever popular service in Whanganui Collegiate School Chapel. The School is based at Whanganui Collegiate Campus during two weeks in early January. Do check our Events Page to book tickets and for more information.
In addition to arranging publicity, hospitality and venues, the committee of Whanganui Opera Week support the New Zealand Opera School students as required during their two week stay in this historic city and if necessary outside that period.
Many well known operatic names with successful national and international careers have attended the School, including Simon O'Neill, the trio 'Sol3 Mio' who came here over several years; Philip Rhodes, Bianca Andrews and Hadleigh Adams. There are many more students who have progressed to study and perform in the great opera houses of Europe and America.
Whanganui Opera Week is recognised as one of the region’s most popular events and attracts visitors both nationally and internationally.
