Events

The people of Whanganui have taken the NZ Opera School and the students to their hearts. So much so that most public events are quickly sold out. Tickets will be available from 1st November at the Royal Wanganui Opera House.
For the two Masterclasses a limited number of tickets will be available at the door on a first come first served basis.  The Chapel Service is open with no booking necessary.
Doors will open one hour before each event 


Heritage House Lunchtime Recital
9th January 2019, at 12 noon

This event is presented by The Dame Malvina Major Scholars.
The singers are selected by audition on the basis of their musical ability.
Splendid music, delicious food and a beautiful environment ensure the popularity of this event.

Public Masterclass with Della Jones & Russell Smythe

11th January and 14th January 2019, at 7.30pm 

The tutors who are selected to teach at the NZOS are of the very highest standard from within New Zealand and from overseas.  If you have never been to Masterclasses before, we urge you to experience a training session in progress. The Masterclasses give a greater insight into the development of the human voice, and you will be informed and entertained by the experience. 
You are invited to join the students and tutors for a glass of wine or juice after the class.

Chapel Service "In Praise of Music"

Each year, one of our most popular events is the non-denominational service held in the beautiful Wanganui Collegiate School Chapel. The emphasis throughout is on music and you can be assured that with more than twenty trained voices along with the School Staff and Tutors all accompanied by the stunning sounds of the recently restored organ, you will be treated to a moving and uplifting experience.

Concert on the River - Opera and Aroha
17th January 2019 (18th January contingency)

The 25th anniversary of the founding of the New Zealand Opera School will be held on the Whanganui River and is entitled OPERA and AROHA on the River.  The historic riverboats, the Waimarie and Wairua, will be the stage for the evening with a special floating pontoon between the shore and the boat. The riverboats will be joined by the Putiki Marae Waka making its way up the Awa bearing Waiata performers.  Taking part will be alumni from the school from all over the world and students of the current school.  This absolute spectacular celebration of the NZOS is not to be missed! Picnic on the riverbank or book a VIP table - your choice for an extraordinary evening.

Great Opera Moments 2019

Presented by The Freemasons Foundation, Great Opera Moments is an opportunity to be enchanted and entertained by all the students of the School. It will be an evening of arias staged in a magical way at The Royal Wanganui Opera House. Our aim is to give you pure operatic pleasure.
