Whanganui Opera Week is a series of public events where students of the New Zealand Opera School are based at Wanganui Collegiate Campus during 2 weeks in early January. There are various public performances which culminate in a Gala evening at the Royal Wanganui Opera House. Other events include a very popular lunchtime concert; public masterclasses; an evening of singing in various restaurants around town and the sell-out service in Wanganui Collegiate School Chapel.

In addition to arranging publicity, hospitality and venues the committee of Whanganui Opera Week support the New Zealand Opera School as required during their 2 week stay in this historic city and if necessary outside that period.
Many well known operatic names with successful national and international careers attended the School, including Simon O'Neill - who occasionally revisits the School as tutor; the trio 'Sol3 Mio' came here over several years; Philip Rhodes attended the School and there are many more students who have progressed to study in the great opera houses of Europe and America.
